It depends on how you build it. Doing it yourself, it is free and you learn a lot but it takes a lot of time. Platforms, for the most part, they are pretty economical. And a fractional AI team, it is going to be more expensive.
So how do I not waste a lot of money? How do I make sure it is actually useful and it is helping me and that it actually gets completed and maintained?
Do it yourself
First of all, it is free and you learn a lot.
It is still going to take you a couple weeks, maybe a month, maybe a month and a half just to crank out the initial version of the project if it is a big one. If it is a small little one, you probably get it done in a weekend.
If we do it ourselves, we have to be prepared with the option of putting in 10 to 20 hours per week in maintaining it.
I do not think you should pay anyone to do your first AI project. I think you should experiment with AI first, get a sense of where it might be useful in your business.
Hire someone to build it and leave
There is no software on this planet that can survive after being created in a month. It needs maintenance, it needs adjustments.
You might realize that you wanted it done this way and it was coded that way. But down the line, you actually want it this way. And the first way ends up costing you more time or money.
Buy into a platform
For the most part, they are pretty economical.
But you are going to have to dedicate a person to go in, baby the platform, and they will spend a majority of their time reviewing the output, making sure it lines up with your company.
A fractional AI team
It is going to be more expensive. And that is just how it is when you have a team that is working with you every day, every week to make your systems, your AI, and make sure it is maintained.
But the benefit is that you have a team and they actually care about your outcome because if you are not winning, they are not winning.
The cost that keeps running
If you keep compiling more and more features without trying to build an architecture for your project, it will cost you a lot of money because the AI will have to read through your thousand files that you have created and that will just turn into kind of a token burning.
Is it making you money?
Most importantly, is it making you money? Is it actually helping? Is it improving your economics? And if it is not, things need to change.
